Recycled: The Real Story about Cost, Availability, and Quality

On November 9th, 1999, GreenWorks.tv webcast live this EPA WasteWise
satellite forum. The program was designed to provide businesses, governments
and other organizations with insights on ways to purchase quality,
competitively priced recycled products.The forum featured the following
presentations and case studies:
Introduction/Overview
The program begins with overviews
of the forum, the WasteWise program, and the partners
involved in the Buy Recycled Business Alliance. Also in the overview,
Richard Keller, a nationally recognized trainer on buying recycled
products with Maryland Environmental Service, shows and discusses
the wide range of recycled products available in the market today.
Mr. Keller also dispels misperceptions about recycled products costing
more and having poor performance. At the conclusion of this segment,
Mr. Keller provides information about evolving procurement guidelines
that are available.
Large
Corporation: McDonalds
In this segment, Bob Langert, Director of Public and Community Affairs
at McDonald's Corporation discusses how one of the largest purchasers
of recycled materials in the U.S. has looked systematically at purchasing
recycled products throughout its operations. McDonald's has found
that working with suppliers to integrate environmental criteria is
a key component in the purchasing process and can result in a broad
range of benefits. Mr. Langert also discusses buying recycled packaging,
shipping materials and even restaurant construction materials.
Small Business - Office Plan
In this case study, Susan McCloskey, President of Office Plan discusses
how her small office furniture re-manufacturing company worked with
its employees and vendors to explore opportunities for buying products
with recycled content. Ms. McCloskey also discusses how small businesses
can overcome obstacles, such as lack of purchasing staff, to become
pro-active purchasers of recycled products. Specifically, she talks
about her experiences with recycled toner cartridges, plastic lumber
and other products.
Government - King County, Washington
In this case study, Eric Nelson, the Environmental Purchasing Coordinator
for King County, Washington talks about how his organization has become
a leader in the arena of buying recycled products. King County has
found ways to save money while improving the environmental impacts
of its work. Mr. Nelson describes the challenges they faced as they
tried to change and overcome long-standing practices.
Closing
The final segment of the program includes questions for the panel
from viewers all over the country. In addition, there were a number
of resources for viewers to go to for more information and to take
the next step and get involved.
