Stella Rimington was educated at Nottingham Girls’ High School, and Edinburgh and Liverpool UniversitiesIn 1959, she began working in Worcestershire County Archives, on the move, in 1962, at the India Office Library in London, as Guardian responsible for manuscripts relating to the period of British domination in IndiaIn 1965, she joined the Security Service (MI5) part-time while in India, accompanying her husband on a posting at the British High Commission in New Delhi.Upon her return to the UK, she joined MI5 as a full-time employeeDuring his career in MI5, which lasted from 1969 to 1996, Stella Rimington worked in all major areas of responsibility – counter-subversion, counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism and successively became Director of each of the three branchesShe was appointed Director General of MI5 in 1992.She was the first woman to hold the post and the first Managing Director whose name was publicly announced by appointment.During her time as CEO, she pursued a policy of greater openness for MI5, giving the 1994 Dimbleby BBC TELEVISION Conference and several other public lectures and publication of a booklet on the ServiceShe was made a Dame Commandeur de l’ordre du Bain (DCB) in 1995, and received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from the Universities of Nottingham and Exeter.Following her retirement from MI5 in 1996, she became a Non-Executive Director of Marks & Spencer, BG Group plc and Whitehead Mann la gkrShe is President of the Institute for Cancer Research and a member of the Board of the Royal Marsden NHS Trust.She has two daughters and a granddaughter
