This fabulous anthology is sure to be a fundamental text for the history of medicine and social sciences classes in colleges across the country. In order to demonstrate how medical research has influenced Western cultural perspectives, the publishers have collected original works from 61 different authors around nine major themes (among them,”Anatomy and Destiny,””Psyche and Soma,” and “The Construction of Pain, Suffering and Death”).The range writers of Aristotle, the Bible, and Louis Pasteur, Masters and Johnson, Ernest Hemingway, and Simone de Beauvoir. The primary sources chosen to illustrate the themes are well chosen and the contrast with the other good. However, the literature brief for selections centres around authors and provides little or no discussion of “relevance to handy topics” selections. This book, the best would be to read in class or in a group where texts of meaning in relation to the other can be discussed, but the book is sufficient for him if the reader is willing to do some of the critical thinking.
