The movie Rabbit-Proof Fence is based on this true account of Doris Pilkington’s mother’s mother Molly, who, like a young girl drives her two sisters on an extraordinary 1,600 kilometers on foot to the house.Under Western Australia’s disparaging 1930s alienation policy, the girls were abducted from their Aboriginal families in Jigalong on the shores of the Lesser Sand Desert, and transported halfway through the state of Moore River Indigenous Colony, north of Perth. Here, Aboriginal children have been educated in the ways of white society and forbidden to speak their mother tongue. The three girls – aged 8,11 and 14 managed to escape from the colony – repressive and brutal conditions of treatment.Barefoot, without provisions or cards, they start to find the rabbit-proof fence, knowing that he was passing near their house in the north.Followed by the Indigenous Police and Researchers, planes, they hid in terror, survived in the bush, desperate to return to the world they knew.
